The Japanese knew its importance and refused to allow the Allies to take it. After heavy casualties, the Allied forces took over the island.

The "Holocaust" is a term given to describe The Nazi attempt to rid the world of those considered undesirables. The most famous of these groups is the Jews, but Hitler also exterminated those with physical disabilities, eastern Europeans, and many other groups. Before and during WWII the Jews and other undesirables were tracked down and put into camps. In these camps, the Nazis experimented on them, degraded them, and treated them worse than animals. One of the themes of WWII is this civilian targeting by the axis powers. We started looking at this with the Nanking Massacre this week. Today you will watch a video of a Holocaust surviving and hear her share her story. Instructions: Watch the video and anwser these questions/ Big idea: Nazis attempted to exterminate groups they found undesirable. The way they treated these people will later be considered a "crime against humanity" Objective: I can empathize with those who endured the Nazi Holocaust. Day two of Nanking Massacre- You are to complete the Highlighted Yellow portion of the activity that you will find at the top of the document.
Instructions: You are to determine if the term, "The rape of Nanking' is a fair term to assign to this event. Think of how that term brings to mind horrible inhumane acts. Is it a fair term? More specific instruction can be found highlighted in the document. Throughout WWII there were several atrocities that took place. Entire people groups were targeted and an attempt was made to exterminate them. One of the things that sets WWII apart from other modern conflicts was how some countries stripped other people of their basic human dignity. The German attack on the Jewish population during the Holocust is well known for good reason. On the other half of the world, however, the Japanese were committing cruel and inhumane acts. These acts are not nearly as widely known. The most atrocious of these acts was the invasion of Nanking. Nanking was a city in China. Before WWII began Japan invaded China. Today's lesson will be focused on the Japanese treatment of the Chinese in this city.
BIG IDEA: During WWII the Japanese and Germans denied many groups of their basic human rights and basic human dignity.
